Ze względu na krótki czas pozostały do Szybowcowych Mistrzostwa Świata w Waikerie (Australia) postanowiono wykorzysta część elementów z produkowanego seryjnie szybowca SZD-38A Jantar 1. Dlatego też w prototypach zastosowano kadłub z usterzeniem z Jantara 1. Pierwszy prototyp SP-2685 w dniu 03.10.1973 roku oblatał Adam Zientek, w Bielsku. Start na mistrzostwach w 1974 roku przyniósł Franciszkowi Kępce 3-cie miejsce, a Stanisławowi Wujczakowi 8-me w klasie standard.
